This Is Gonna Be BIG!

Moved on! Check TheCairoCalls

This is all over the news.
A group of "western" intellectuals, most of whom are from "eastern" origins, mind you, have jointly published a manifesto declaring their opposition to "Islamism" as a form of totalitarianism (the -ism seems to do the trick!), and urging everybody to stand together to "assure universal rights to oppressed or discriminated people". Fair enough!
You can read the full transcript, and follow international reactions here.

The manifesto, as it stands, is balanced, straight-forward, and, frankly, a bit inconsequential. It would be funny though to see how this gets morphed, and deformed as it propagate.
I am putting all my money on this: unprecedented demonstrations erupt on Friday, after the prayers, across the middle east. Calls for boycotting the "west" are everywhere (especially your local supermarket). Ahmadinejad issues a counter-manifesto declaring opposition and refusal to ideals of democracy, and tolerance. He ponders privately "Is it permissible to issue another fatwa against Rushdie? I read somewhere that two death fatwas can invalidate each other!". Ahram says the manifesto is a "dangerous escalation", while Al-Jazeera airs a secret tape of the satanic rituals performed by the signees before they penned the declaration. An Imam somewhere declares that "all manifestos are haram to start with". MB chicks cry while holding Korans, and demonstrating in front of Cairo university. And, I almost forgot, the EU flag (it was getting a bit out of hand with all these countries, so this will do) is burned. Of course, together with the American and Israeli ones.
Wanna bet?

Moved on!

Tomanbay: Having threesomes is not cheating, because the 2 girls cancel each other out. The same rule is not applied for Fatwas unfortunately!

The story has been around for over a day now. I wonder howcome the International media (NYT, CNN, etc.) hasn't picked it up yet?

jelsted (thanks for the link, and the visits by the way)..I don't think that is actually big news...I am just saying that as always, we will make it appear as such...so I am not wondering nyt, cnn, etcc...didn't pick it up yet...they all when flags start burning!

Unfortunally I don’t share your optimism.
I don’t think this manifesto will find any support in US
and only a little in Europe.

The US government and media will probably
try to ignore this and let it slide.

No one want’s to engage in a conflict with
the muslim world, and one day it’ll just
be all to late :-(

actually, who said anything about optimism?
the fact that a big fuss wil be made around this only goes to show that everybody is trying to fan the flame...
what is said in this document, is what every moderate muslim believe in...there is no point in making a big deal about it. except if some muslims are so insecure that they hate self criticism or any criticism from others...
but thats just some...it is unfortunate this some u get to see on TVs all the time

But the democratic part of the world SHOULD make a big deal out of this !

Allow me to quote from this article in Sunday Times:

Europe is shuffling into darkness. It is proving incapable of standing up to its enemies, and in an effort to accommodate the peripheral rights of a minority is failing to protect the most basic rights of its own people.

The governments of Europe have been tricked into believing that criticism of a belief is the same thing as criticism of a race. And so it is becoming increasingly difficult and dangerous to criticise a growing and powerful ideology within our midst. It may soon, in addition, be made illegal.

Or this from Frontpagemag.com:

The fact is, that the fanatics rule Islam at this moment in history. It is the fanatics who march. It is the fanatics who wage any one of 50 shooting wars world wide. It is the fanatics who systematically slaughter Christian or tribal groups throughout Africa and are gradually taking over the entire continent in an Islamic wave. It is the fanatics who bomb, behead, murder, or honor kill. It is the fanatics who take over mosque after mosque. It is the fanatics who zealously spread the stoning and hanging of rape victims and homosexuals. The hard quantifiable fact is, that the "peaceful majority" is the "silent majority" and it is cowed and extraneous.

Well, you touched on a major problem that we have, that is, making fusses(!) about nothing. This was clearly illustrated in the Danish cartoons incidents....People ignored all the most important and stuck to the most trivial.
I remember the same thing happening when Sheikh Ahmed Yassin , the leader of Hamas, died; people wept and demanded a fierce reaction while a couple of month before that, 400 Egyptians died in the famous train accident without anyone doing anything. It seems to me that what is important in this country is what the MB wants to be important...they just have to push the button!

BTW, I think I know you, I mean personally, not sure though---have to read more in your blog to figure that out!!!

dear tb,

we @ aqoul seem to have been the only ones slamming the manifesto.

it seems more like semi-intellectual masturbation.

oh well ...
